Re-print from the Innisfail Advocate, Saturday December 16, 2017
An lnnisfail couple plans to put the Cassowary Coast firmly on the map as a must-see destination for Chinese tourists.
Owners of map making company Trax2, Bill Lam and Tianjing Zeng are producing a bilingual map they hope will capture the attention of Chinese tourists travelling during Chinese New Year in February. The pair also wants to help local businesses get "Chinese-ready."
Mr. Lam said lnnisfail had the potential to be a tourist hotspot with Chinese travellers.
"There are a lot of visitors that land in Cairns and they all go north – they’ll go to the Daintree, they go to Cape Tribulation but lnnisfail has all that those places have," he said
If you compare Port Douglas to lnnisfail, what can you do in Port Douglas? Exactly what you can do here, except there are better things to do here.
Innisfail if developed properly could be the centre of Far North Queensland.
It will also include a list of basic English phrases.
"The idea is that Chinese New Year is when we should be targeting the Chinese," Bill said
"We were trying to get this underway before Chinese New Year, but we kind of missed that. “Although we won't be able to attract new visitors here we can at least get them to the visitors that are already here and they will hopefully take the maps home and share them around."
He said digital methods of marketing often missed Chinese tourists.
A lot of people don't realize that Chinese social media is different from Western social media," he said
They don't have Facebook, Twitter, lnstagram they're all blocked in China
"You need to have Wechat or Weibo.
"We can help get businesses Chinese-ready - we can teach them how to say hello and help with signage if they need it.
"It all ties in to give a better experience for Chinese visitors."
The company has created maps for Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai and is hoping to expand in Australia to include maps of Cairns and Mareeba.
We started doing maps in China in 2003 and we have a lot of experience with bilingual publications." Mr. Lam said
"We are also working on a Cairns map, but we really want to get this one done first."
